De grote Mont Ventoux blog! The big Mont Ventoux Blog!

We vertrokken zondagavond vanaf Schiphol.

Ergens halverwege haalden we de man aka Berg in.

Heel even was ik emotioneel.

It is now a week ago. We are already since Friday in the Alps. First with just the five of us and since yesterday with Suus her brother, wife and children. We are making nice hikes. Yesterday we made a walk of nearly 6 hours. As usual, I also know no limits with my kids..... but they find it super fun and walk as real Deitersen in the mountains, with their own backpack with supplies, sometimes a little bit of whining, but mostly with great strides to the eternal snow and the mysterious high peaks.

I look back with great pleasure to my Mont Ventoux trip. We left Sunday evening from Schiphol. The group consisted of my older brother and sister (my younger brother only joined us late Monday night), the Austria specialist from Leiden, the man “from Singapore who goes to New York”, the man “aka mountain” and my dear Suzanne. It is always exciting to see how a group who does not know each other will interact. But as expected, it quickly became a homogeneous group, which laughed together and about each other. As a surprise, I had made cycling jerseys for the group. a little bold in color and composition but so beautiful and recognizable on the bald mountain

We arrived around 1 o’clock at night at our  destination, where the flashing of the red light of the "Observatoire" the only hint of the bald mountain in the dark was.

Monday morning after a healthy breakfast we picked up our bikes. Suus at the last minute had decided to join us for cycling trip of that day. As Pantani she rode with us to the mountain passes. She clearly has talent and finds it fun too. After the summer I will need to find a bike for her so we can cycle together through the Dutch landscape! We had a wonderful Monday and cycled over 3 cols;, the col de Suzette, col de Chaine and after a nice lunch at la Fleur Blue (nice table d'hote run by Dutch couple) the Col de la Madeleine, just over 60 km and about 800 meters altitude done in a day. For the trained cyclists a nice round, for those who had not trained as much a bit strenuous ...... On the second col my parents in law were waiting as a surprise, they were in neighboorhood. How nice of them to join us! After a healthy dinner we went to bed on time for the big day.

Tuesday morning early we got up with some healthy tension in our mind without my stress being to much for me (or group). Our nice hotel was on the Mont Ventoux route, which meant that we needed to go down 4 kilometers to the fountain in Bedoin from which every true Mont Ventoux climb begins. Around half past nine the real journey began.

I had planned to do it in a relax mode. To ensure that I would no where go in the red zone. The first five miles are fairly flat, we climbed it almost as a group up. Nice and easy. The man “aka mountain” led the way for me and defined the relax pace, thanks!

Then you go into the woods. Suddenly you can not see the road anymore in front of you, you have only trees around you and the road is suddenly treacherous steep with  elevatio of  up to around 11.5%. The man “from Singapore who will go to New York” had already left us and had moved up, while others had dropped off and started to climb in their own pace. I joined with my older brother and sister and we climbed quietly at an easy pace. They again determined the pace and kept me calm. After about 4 kilometers in the forest I felt that I could go faster, I put my music on and began quietly to them to cycle away from them, looking for the man “from Singapore who go to New York”.

Halfway I knew it, it was doable even more, it was doable within 2 hours. I was suddenly overtaken by a young Belgian rider, and he cycle just a little bit faster than me, he rode as fast as I could also go I thought. I followed him until I was almost out of the woods (after ~ 15km), he was the pace maker, I was the hunter (or I was the vulture who followed him for a free lunch ...). Some where at the end of the forest I overtook the man “from Singapore who will go to New York “.

Along the road Suus and her parents followed us as real “soigneurs” with water and bananas and to take pictures. After the forest, if you have passed the mystical Chalet Reynard, the bare part of the mountain begins. You suddenly see the top, you can finally image how much longer it is. I knew it now for sure I was going to make it within the two hours.

Just before the top I saw the young Belgian rider in front of me, I had to finish in front of him, and so it happened. After 1 hour and 52 minutes I was finally on the top, tired and satisfied but not broken. I had enough energy for the second trip. I had now to wait for the rest.

Each one of them came in at their on pace, one fitter than the other. I have tremendous respect for those who had little or no training, yet had climbed the mountain at their on pace.

The view from the top was beautiful. You needed e a jacket against the cold ( wind). Together we drove to Sault for a carbohydrate lunch, while overlooking the bald mountain. The climb from Sault is longer, 25km instead of 21km, but less steep and less altimeter (1200 m instead of 1600 m).

We left together from Sault. The man “aka Mountain” and the man “from Singapore who will go to New York” made a fast getaway. The Deiters family and the Austria specialist rode en groupe the first few kilometers. Slowly the group became smaller. Somewhere halfway we overtook the man “aka Mountain”. I drove with my sister the last kilometers before the bald area.

At Chalet Reynard my sister let me go and I went in search of the man “from Singapore who will go to New York”. I overtook him just after he had met the man with the hammer. I'm sure that if he had trained more he would have ridden faster than me. I have respect for his perseverance and enthusiasm to try it. The weather was also unlike the first ascent, in the sun. Stronger wind and clouds, a pleasant change from the hot weather during the morning ride. Each cycled the second climb again at their own pace, slowly taming the bald mountain. Nice to see how my brother and the Austria specialist, both with little or no cycling mileage in the legs before the plan came up to cycle the Mont Ventoux, cycled up the bald mountain twice without meeting the man with the hammer. My sister is naturally a great athlete and did it without much trouble twice. My younger brother rode it without having been on a bike once this year, he did it purely on willpower. I can imagine that how broken he must have been the days after. The man “aka Mountain” had been sick and thus not able to train. He did it on sheer willpower, running into himself several times to get to the top.

But once we were all  on top, it was like we had made it as a team. Time for another group photo!

It was now time to enjoy. The day ended in the garden of Chateau Talaud with a long linen table with a beautiful Mathusalem bottle of good red wine (for me unfortunately only green tea). It was a hell of day! Unfortunately we needed to rise and shine early for our plane back home.

It is over. I did it without really going bust. The training was not for nothing. The following days I was tired, very tired sometimes, the effort, the short nights and the fact that it was over. For a moment I was emotional. It was successful but what to do next? An emptiness took possession of me. But fortunately the adrenaline flowed through my body and joy overcame the grief. Less and less I feel like a cancer patient. Increasingly I feel like a survivor. Maybe that's not medically possible, but that is how I feel and I enjoy it!

Without your support and donations it would never have been the same. The count now stands at Euro 58,000. I expect a decent amount from the doubler. Maybe we will reach the Euro 65,000. I understand from the AVL (hospital) that this might be the most successful personal fundraising in its history. You made this possible. Thanks. In September there will be an official ceremony during which I will hand over a cheque while my doctor will also hold a lecture on research on oesophageal cancer. You are hereby invited.

From the end of August I will maybe start working a few mornings a week. For now I will enjoy 5 weeks of holiday with the family. I'm excited. I am ready.

Geslaagd! Completed!

Even genieten! Een langer blog volgt binnenkort. Nu even uitrusten.

Stay strong.

I will beat the statistics.

I have done it. I made it, with flying colors. In 1:50 from Sault (1.52 from Bédoin). It actually was not as hard as I had thought. Everybody completed the 2 ascents. I have huge respect for the guys with less or no training who climbed the MV twice; OK it took a little longer but still respect!

I'm tired and satisfied. In the evening we ate at long table in the Garden of at Chateau Talaud until late in the evening. For now I will just enjoy a moment of nothing! A longer blog will follow soon. I will rest for now.

Stay strong.

Ready for the big day!

Tomorrow is the big day. I am a bit nervous but today showed that we are in form. We cycled 65k and did 3 small mountains. Suzanne joined us on a bike, she really has the ability to become a great rider.

The group is great, we have despite my nervousness a lot of laughs. I'll try to post something have way.

I am ready!

Energy!

I will beat the statistics.

Tuesday is the day. I'm ready. I've training enough for it. Let's hope my legs feel good.

I had a gastroscopy last week.  They go with a camera to look at your oesophagus and stomach. They also took some tissue samples. The place where my original tumor was was still visible, but had become even smaller. According to the doctor you could look over it if you would not know where to look for. It was according to the doctor unique that it had shrunk even more since November. It gives me good courage. I'm on the right track. Who would have dreamed of that a year ago! My doctor has warned me that I should over do it on the Mont Ventoux. I'm going to change my strategy and will not do my best for a time within 2 hours but will focus on completing it twice while I still can smile on the picture!

After a year my doctor begins to know me well. So good that the sisters wondered if we knew each from somewhere else. That is great. Sometime after the summer my doctor will hold a talk about research on esophageal cancer. Anyone who supported me is invited. I will hand her over a cheque that afternoon ... how big that cheque will be depends on you and me ... you, for those who have not yet supported; me, whether I will be able to complete it twice and get the doubler . The amount currently is just over 50,000 Euro; it might even be higher depending on YOU. I am incredibly grateful to you for the support.

We celebrated my cancer anniversary. My sister and some good friends had a arranged a surprise dinner for us. We were aware of nothing, I would go to Maastricht to train but was suddenly kidnapped along with Suus. After half an hour with a blindfold on driving through our region we were back at home; where we received a standing ovation as entering an Olympic stadium. Energy! It was a fantastic evening, everyone had made a short movie, which was edited in one cool format, it was cozy but also very intense. It's still strange to celebrate your cancer anniversary but it felt good. Suzanne and I were both overwhelmed by it and stirred. As a real writer I read my last blog out loud. It fitted very much seamlessly into the feeling that we had that night. My friends from Singapore had also made a film on their own initiative. How coincidental, but oh so fun.

We will try to update you on my progress on Tuesday...... in any event I am ready. I 'm a little tense but I will convert into energy on my cycle. Bring it on.

Stay strong

I will beat the statistics.

Dankbaarheid en hoop - Gratitude and hope

"Yes, you have to worry"; zei de dokter.

1. Ondanks het slechte nieuws bleven we relatief rustig

Stay strong.

I will beat the statistics.

Saturday it will be one year ago. 1 year ago that my / our life dramatically changed, at full speed, a sudden emergency brake. A hairpin in our lives that we had not foreseen, with an immediate U-turn back to the Netherlands. There we went back the basics and we cautiously got hope that I would do it better than the statistics It marked the end of our uncomplicated live.

This is a special blog. A blog which I was not sure I would be able to write a year ago, but which I was convinced that I was going to do everything in my power to do. I made it, and how. The first 'anniversary' of my cancer. That many more may follow. I now realize that when people ask me how old I am, I always say 38, while I became 39 in February. My normal life has come to a stop when I was 38, to be precise after 38 years and 128 days exactly. My life with cancer began on June 15, 2012. Since then my real life was over and I'm 38 and have cancer forever.

A year ago I was on a boat with 10 guys in the gulf of Phuket. There is no starker contrast than the time when I knew nothing about it and the time after the doctor's call. "Yes, you have to worry", he said doctor.

Last week I listen again to all conversations with doctors we spoke with in the beginning (We recorded all our phone calls with an I-phone; the idea was to be able to listen back to all conversations afterwards. I never did so, who wants to hear for a second time that you will probably die soon?). I actually wanted to let you hear what it's like to get the news that you have only a short time to live; unfortunately the quality is not good enough and you must see it also to have the correct picture. Next time I need to fix a Go-Pro on my forehead ;-). It was confronting to listen to the conversations again but somehow it was liberating. I have reached the first milestone. The swallowing of the surgeon during the first interview, after I told him about the lump in my neck is very painful to hear. Until that time it is clear that he thought that the tumor was only locally ... unfortunately. Urgently I was referred to the oncology department. The conversation with the results of the CT scan is the most confrontational, because it became clear how bad the situation really, ie phase 4; as a result of which surgical operation and radiation made no sense.

A few things caught my attention when listening to the calls:
1. Despite the bad news we were relatively balanced
2. From the beginning we tried to be positive and we did not believe in statistics
3. Singapore is so efficient! You know everything on day 1 and on day 2 you can already start with chemo. I had almost indeed started chemo on the 16th of June.
4. We were so happy that despite the extension of my metastases my organs were clean.
5. Singlish is a weird and funny language!

We are now a year later. What kind of feeling does that give me? Gratitude and hope. Grateful that I have reached this time. Grateful that I have Suus beside me. Grateful for her support and that of the children. Grateful that I was able to celebrate the birthdays of Oene, his 5th,  Eline, her 6th, Fleur he 8th and Suus, her 40th. Grateful that the children landed well. Thankful that we feel at home in Bussum and carefully are making new friends. Grateful that the children were accepted in school and other facilities. Grateful for the help and band with our parents, our siblings, our 'close friends', and our old, new and overseas friends. Grateful for the support of friends, family and strangers. Grateful for the attention of everyone. Grateful for the support for my Stay Strong action (for those have who not yet joined - do it, every little bit helps - with a bit more support we will reach the Euro 40,000 limit!!). Grateful for the job that my employer has created. Grateful for the time and attention of secretaries, bosses and other colleagues. Grateful for the personal and delicate care of my doctor, nurse practitioner and other staff of the AVL. Grateful for the friendly atmosphere that prevails in the AVL. Grateful that I was not sick from the chemo. Grateful that the side effects were/are not to painful. Grateful that I have my hair back. Grateful that I have been able and am to exercise. Grateful for my 27 days of skiing . Grateful for the beautiful trip to Rome. Grateful for the big holiday to the U.S.. Grateful that the chemo seems to work well for me. Grateful for the great year. Grateful that I'm still here. Grateful for what is to come and hope that I will last for long. Looking forward to my second cancer 'anniversary'. That many more may follow.

For those who have not understood it yet my last CT scan and blood levels were again unchanged and thus positive, on to the next scan over 9 weeks. Now ready to enjoy the summer with occasionally a benchmark (2x blood test and endoscopy). I am confident but stay vigilant.

Now training hard for the Mont Ventoux. I hope the weather is good and that I will manage to do it twice on July 2nd. I am ready. Bring it on.

Stay strong.

I will beat the statistics.

Spannend en ontspanned - Tension and relaxation

Daarnaast voel ik me weer eens nuttig.

Stay strong!

I will beat the statistics.

Today I have had my CT-scan, Monday morning the results will come in, fingers crossed that they will be again positive! What ever the result is I will cycle, I have to with so much support for my fund raising! Many thanks for sponsoring me if you do, if you are not yet a sponsor, there is still plenty of time to do it before the big day on July 2nd. See https://actie.nki-avlfonds.nl/Stay-Strong

I'm touched by the success of the charity ride, especially since there are so many people who support me. It is very special to get a donation from people I do not know. It's like my story is relevant and touches people. In addition, I feel useful again. I am doing something back. Remember, hether small or big, all donations help and give me even more incentive to conquer the Mont Ventoux!

The time after the scan feel anxious. The photos are taken, there is nothing more to do. Thanks to Suzanne, I have learned to enjoy the time before the result, instead of stressing all the time until the results .... that does not always work, the chances are that I will have to take some sleeping pills. The next few days are filled with fun activities. Some ex-Singaporean are coming over to celebrate the grand  opening of the Cold Storage and Swiss Butcher in Bussum Saturday night! Tomorrow a round of gold and during the next few days 80km of cycling. If it is not yet clear I am ready for monday and will do every I can until and after that day!

Stay strong!

I will beat the statistics.
